Horses for Adoption - NEW LISTINGS !!

Currently we only adopt horses to people in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and West Virginia. We welcome horses and equines of all breeds and descriptions into the Rescue; the majority are Thoroughbreds, Quarter horses, Saddlebreds, Standardbreds, Arabians, drafts, ponies, mules and donkeys.

We have several young, healthy horses awaiting adoption, most only need a little training, patience and TLC to flourish in a new career. In fact, many of our adopted horses have become serious show competitors in a variety of disciplines, including hunter and eventing fields. Our goal is to find the perfect horse for your lifestyle, your home and your heart. We welcome prospective adopters to contact the Rescue for more information and to set up an appointment to meet the horses.

It is our goal to place horses into “forever” homes where they will be wanted and cared for properly for the rest of their lives. The adoption rules are straightforward: By adopting a horse from this Rescue, you agree to provide the animal with a caring, loving home, or return the horse to the Rescue in the event the horse needs to be placed in a new home. Adopters cannot breed, track race or resell any equine adopted from this Rescue. The Rescue retains legal ownership of every equine that comes to the rescue, for the rest of its life. This “Protective Ownership” stipulation allows us to legally reclaim a horse if at any time it is found to be in an unsatisfactory situation, and place it in a more suitable environment. This “tough love” rule may seem extreme, but it is intended to ensure the best possible adoption outcome horses and adopters.

The below pictures and corresponding write-ups provide only a basic idea of the present selection so please check often because we update the listing on a regular basis.

Please note:  If you need to return a Lost and Found adopted horse, please contact Gary Young at 703-675-6063

  Jelly Bean (Prime Night)

  • Age: 6
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 16.2 hands

Watch clipYou Tube

She came to us last fall. She is now w/t/c and started over small fences. Has been hacking out cross country and jumping small jumps. Jelly Bean has a lot of heart, she was difficult to start but now has come around and learning to trust and respect her rider. She is affectionate on the ground and easy to work around. She is comfortable and has lots of eloquent jump to her. She will need someone who can be patient with her strong will! She is brave, has a lead change but needs many more hours of basic flat work to finish her.

Please contact Holly Gilmore to set up appointment to see Jelly Bean.

Makbar's Account
  • Age: 6
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 15.2 hands

Macky has been going under tack since last summer and is very brave and honest to all his jumps, has a nice way of going. He needs work on his canter and getting to his jumps in a more balanced fashion  He wants to learn and tries hard, we think he would make a fun event horse since he is so brave. He has already gone up and down banks, water, trekkners and beginner novice ditches.

Macky needs a rider who doesn’t mind his forward way of going, he does settle and soften but he needs more work and time to be a pro! He has personality and enjoys company of others. He can be difficult for the farrier but getting better. He prefers being out but currently has a stall and daily daytime turn out.

Please contact Holly Gilmore to set up appointment to see Jelly Bean.

Ming Toy
  • Age:
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 15.2 hands

Ming came to us as a severe starvation case.  Since then, he has fully recovered and is back in work and is doing great. He will need an intermediate rider. He is sound, no vices and he gets along well with others in the pasture.  He is good for the farrier, clips well and is nice to work around.

UPDATE:  Has recently been training cross country.  Has successfully jumped 2'6 course; ditches, drops/banks, water, doing it all.  Pleasant to ride in and out of the ring.

  Sunshine
  • Aged draft mule
  • Mare
  • ? hands

Sunshine is an aged Draft Mule that we rescued from slaughter in horrendous condition. She was covered from head to toe in manure and not able to bare any weight on her hind foot, due to a severe case of Canker. Sunshine had spent all of her life as a work mule and then was sent to slaughter. She has spent the last several weeks at a vets getting the medical treatment she needs, despite all that she has been through she is one of the kindest souls you will ever meet, she does however not like her hind foot being worked on, hence the need for a pair of stock so we can continue on with her treatment once she arrives back at the rescue.

Muchacha Grande
  • Age: 17
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands

Muchacha, as we fondly call her, is one very sweet lady. We were told that she was involved in a horse trailer accident a few days before she was sold for slaughter. We found her in the meat pen with a look of not caring if she lived another day or died.  She was very thin and had many wounds and abrasions all over her body. A few short weeks with us and she is a totally different horse. She loves attention, getting treats and grooming. You can do just about anything to her. Super companion with other other horses, gets along with both mares and geldings. She has had training under saddle and appears to know her job. We would recommend a low level intermediate rider or above. She would make a very nice family horse for light pleasure or maybe even a fun show here or there.

  Lois and Liam

Lois and Liam are mom and son. We rescued them from slaughter.  Liam was born at a kill sale for goats, we saw him born and knew we had to get mom and baby to safety. Lois and Liam are now healthy and are looking for the perfect place to call home. Both are updated on shots and worming, Liam has also been dehorned and neutered. Please contact the rescue if you would like to adopt either or both of them.
